Songs

These two classic songs are two of the most covered songs in the history of popular music and can be heard in Karaoke bars across the world. It is no coincidence that both songs use the same waltz time pattern which has been adapted successfully by songwriters in many different genres of music. Everybody Hurts by alternative rock band REM is a relatively easy piece to play and uses open chords in the key of D. Hallelujah by Canadian poet and songwriter Leonard Cohen is a little bit more challenging so you might want to warm up with some technical exercise on half barres to help with the F chord. Enjoy, sing-along-along and let the emotions flow.

R.E.M – Everybody Hurts

Leonard Cohen – Hallelujah

Greensleeves is an old English folk song at the London Stationer’s company in September 1580. The song is often performed instrumentally by guitar players but has been adapted by many artists including heavy metal bands and jazz saxophonists. My arrangement has a strong triple metre feel so make sure to count 1, 2, 3 / 1, 2, 3 whilst taking note of the dotted note rhythms that occur throughout the piece. I have not included any dynamics in the tab so please do feel to create your own. Personally, I like to emphasise the start of chorus section (following a crotchet rest) by playing slightly louder at its beginning. Once you have mastered the guitar part, why not try some singing?
